UFC 160 results: Dennis Bermudez scores split decision over Max Holloway

Bloody Elbow - 52 min 21 sec ago

Both Dennis Bermudez and Max Holloway were looking to extend their Featherweight win streak to four fights when they met in the UFC 160 FX prelims.

Round 1 got off to a slow start. Bermudez clearly struggled with the reach advantage while Holloway showed solid lateral movement to avoid damage and landed some counters. Spinning back kick from Holloway dropped Dennis. Bermudez clinched up to recover.

Holloway completely dominated this fight. He ate very few solid shots from Bermudez while piecing him up with straight punches of his own. Leg kick from Bermudez tripped up Holloway and he followed that up with a clinch against the cage. Holloway used the whizzer to separate and escape before returning to outpounting Dennis.

Bermudez finally secured a takedown early in the final round but Hollow shrugged it off oto return to his feet. Holloway out struck from distance again before Dennis closed distance for the clinch. His success didn't last long before Max escaped. Bermudez just can't handle Holloway's reach advantage. He got a takedown and landed some solid ground and pound from half-guard. Mike Goldberg actually said it well, "It just took Bermudez too long to get it in this position." Too little, too late.

Max Hollow beat Dennis Bermudez by split decision (29-28 x 2, 28-29).

UFC 160 results: Robert Whittaker stops Colton Smith with strikes in round 3

Bloody Elbow - 1 hour 23 min ago

In each fighters' first bout since winning their respective seasons of The Ultimate Fighter, Welterweights Robert Whittaker and Colton Smith met in the FX prelims of UFC 160.

Whittaker looked incredibly composed early in round 1. He kept his lead left hand all the way down by his hip, but managed to counter Smith repeatedly and defend any takedown attempts. Smith's nose was red and bleeding halfway through the round. Whittaker showed he was by far the better fighter. Smith rushed Whittaker and landed a right hand that dropped Robert. He followed him to the ground but couldn't maintain control before the bell rang.

Smith came out swinging but the counters from Whitaker dropped him twice inside the first 30 seco0nds of round 2. Solid combo from Smith. Whittaker responded with an uppercut, left hook combination. Smith came in flury but ate a counter before landing a low kick. I have no idea why Smith keeps shaking his hands. Smith threw wild shots, but couldn't land while Whittaker teed off on counters and bloodied him up.

The fight really started to get sad for Colton early in the 3rd round. He put everything he had into his combos, but Whittaker stayed back and landed his own shots at will. Finally, Robert dropped Smith and followed up with ground and pound to get the stoppage.

UFC 160 results: Khabib Nurmagomedov suplexes Abel Trujillo to unanimous decision victory

Bloody Elbow - 1 hour 52 min ago

After a little shoving at the weigh-ins, Lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov met Abel Trujillo in the Octagon as the opening fight of the UFC 160 FX prelims.

The fight got off to a slow start before Trujillo hit a takedown about a minute and a half in. Nurmagomedov responded with an armbar attempt that had Abel scrambling. When Trujillo finally escaped, Khabib took control in the clinch. He tossed his opponent several times while mixing in strikes. Abel warned for grabbing the fence. Trujillo somersaulted out of a suplex attempt to take top position but got caught in a triangle. Khabib rolled to mount and then returned to his back in the closing seconds but wasn't able to finish Abel before the bell rang.

Trujillo tried to turn it around early in round two with a big left hand that shook Khabib, but he wasn't able to capitalize. Nurmagomedov responded with a solid right hand of his own before clinching up and taking back control with a takedown. He locked in body triangle as Trujillo bellied-down. After a crazy scramble, Khabib took control of Abel's back again. As the round closed, Nurmagomedov landed some decent strikes from back control.

Early into round 3, Khabib clinched up for yet another takedown on Abel. Trujillo was obviously frustrated here and he had no answer for the far superior grappling of his Russian opponent. Nurmagomedov completely dominant here as he landed a big suplex. Trujillo was entirely outclassed and always a step behind throughout the final fram.

Khabib Nurmagomedov dominated Abel Trujillo to win the unanimous decision (30-27 x 3).

Froch vs Kessler II results: Carl Froch gets revenge, wins unanimous decision

Badlefthook.com - 2 hours 36 min ago

Carl Froch and Mikkel Kessler didn't disappoint spectators at the O2 Arena or TV viewers worldwide tonight, engaging in another fantastic, 12-round battle that may have eclipsed their 2010 bout, and was at worst right on that same level.

In the end, it was Froch getting a measure of revenge, winning the fight by unanimous decision on scores of 115-113, 116-112, and 118-110. BLH had it 115-113 for Froch.

The fight went back-and-forth a good bit, with it seeming like every time Froch (31-2, 22 KO) began to pull away, Kessler (46-3, 35 KO) would muscle his way back into the fight, keeping it close enough that it never seemed like a one-way street.

But Froch was definitely the better man tonight.

"I'd happily do it again and make it 2-1," Froch said to HBO's Max Kellerman, who then asked about a potential rematch with Andre Ward. Ward currently holds the WBA super super middleweight title (yes), while Froch added the WBA regular super middleweight title (I know, right?) to his IBF belt with tonight's win.

"(Ward's) the other target. I've had a 33-fight career, only lost twice," Froch said. "I've set the record (with Kessler) straight tonight, well and truly. I think -- I don't know. I've always said I wouldn't like to fight Andre Ward again. He's a boxing purist, he's very good at what he does, but he's not an entertaining fighter. He's out to win. It's not a fighter's fight. He doesn't seem to get the television companies excited. I could beat Ward, if I get it right. Let's get him over to the United Kingdom and get the fight on next, if he wants it."

Prior to that, Ward, who was ringside commentating for HBO (and taking thinly-veiled shots at Froch all night long, while seemingly rooting hard for Kessler to win), basically said, if not in so many words, that he'll go to the UK if Matchroom Boxing will pay him enough money. "They have to prove how bad they want it," he said. And that, I would say, is fair enough.

34-year-old Kessler took a tough loss here, but there was no evidence that he's washed-up or shot, I don't think. Sure, he wasn't quite as good as he used to be, but he stood in there with a top fighter and gave a hell of an effort. He's still at worst the third-best super middleweight in the world as far as I can see.

As for Froch, he has big fights waiting. Ward could happen, or there could be a third bout with Kessler, if Kessler would want to do a rubber match. Or he could take a stay-busy sort of title defense in the meantime, and see what shakes out after that. It is now established, clearly, that Froch is the second-best super middleweight in the sport today. He could also move up to 175 and face Bernard Hopkins, though promoter Eddie Hearn has not seemed keen on that idea, so that's probably a distant third.

Can Froch beat Ward if he gets another crack at it? Remember there were no volcanoes distracting him like there were against Kessler. He just plain lost to Ward.

UFC 160 results: Stephen Thompson outclasses Nah-Shon Burrell in UD

Bloody Elbow - 2 hours 37 min ago

Stephen Thompson welcomed Nah-Shon Burrell to the Welterweight division in the closing fight of the UFC 160 Facebook prelims. Thompson outworked Burrell throughout their 15 minutes fight. It wasn't especially exciting, but Burrell clearly showed he was by far the better mixed martial artist.

Thompson started the fight with a duo of side kicks, that Burrell defended by bullrushing him into the clinch. Stephens reversed and put Burrel's back against the fence before they separated. Thompson ducked a left hook to score a takedown. More ugly clinch work. They separated again with Thompson getting the edge in the clinch. Couple solid shots landed by Thompson from distance. Nah-Shon went for a trip that Thompson reversed to end up on top. Burrell got back to his feet, but once again ended up defending Thompson's clinch game.

Second verse, same as the first. Thompson scored point from the outside and put Burrell on the defensive any time they entered clinch range. It wasn't the prettiest fight but a solid performance by "Wonderboy".

Thompson was ahead on all cards going in to final round, but Burrell came out aggressive. Unfortunately for him, he once against ended up defending Thompson's clinch. Left hook landed solid from Burrell, but Thompson ate it and backed him off with kicks and punches from distance. Take down from Thompson and Burrell got right back up.

Stephen Thompson defeated Nah-Shon Burrell in a unanimous decision victory.

UFC 160 results: George Roop stopped Brian Bowles in round 2

Bloody Elbow - 3 hours 7 min ago

After an 18 month hiatus, Bantamweight Brian Bowles made his return to action against George Roop on the Facebook portion of the UFC 160 prelims.

Roop looked to use his reach early mixing in leg kicks and straight punches. Bowles stunned him with a right hand but he recovered. They traded punches for another couple minutes before Brian dropped him again. Bowles grabbed the guillotine and couldn't lock it in, but did reverse into mount. He dominated the round with punches from the top before the bell.

Roop looked to learn from his mistake in round 1 by staying way out on the outside to start round 2. Roop caught Bowles coming in and dropped him. He followed him to the ground and finished the fight with strikes.

George Roop TKOd Brian Bowles at 1:43 of round 2.

Stephens took the center of the Octagon from the opening bell. Both fighters trying to find their range but not landing anything significant before Stephens lands a low blow and the action is stopped. After the restart, Stephens eats a big right before taking Payan. down. Estevan grabbed a guillotine but it went no where. Stephens scrambled out of an armbar attempt and bloodied Payan up against the cage.

Payan landed some solid shots to start out the second round, but gave up another takedown. Elbows from guard reopen the cut on Payan's forehead and the blood flowing. Stephens took the back looking for the rear naked choke. Pools of blood formed at Payan's knees as he defended the submission attempt. Payan survived the round.

Only a few seconds into the final round and blood is already streaming from Payan's face. Head kick lands from Stephens before he scored another takedown that lead to back control.
