Bob Arum: Mikey Garcia should leave 126 behind, move up to 130
Badlefthook.com - 6 hours 3 min ago
Mikey Garcia is rumored to be headed toward a September 21 fight against WBO super featherweight titlist Rocky Martinez in Puerto Rico, and promoter Bob Arum thinks that's the exact right move, saying he'd discourage Garcia (32-0, 27 KO) from fighting again at featherweight -- or trying to, anyway.
"Garcia has a bright future. He has to fight at 130-pounds," said Arum. "He can not continue to sacrifice his body to make 126. Hopefully he faces 'Rocky' Martinez."
Garcia missed weight for this past weekend's fight with Juan Manuel Lopez, which he won in four rounds. He said after the fight he might stay at 126 and try to control his diet a little better this time around, but I personally see Arum being right here. There's no reason to fight hard to make 126 pounds. Garcia's getting older and growing, and those last two pounds just weren't coming off to face Lopez. Even if Garcia did maintain a better diet, who's to say his body is going to respond the way that it used to?
A fight with Martinez not only gives Garcia another crack at a world title, but it would put him right back into an HBO main event with a good payday. It seems like the right move.

UFC on Fox 8: Johnson vs. Moraga fight card
Bloody Elbow - 6 hours 33 min ago
The UFC is making a summer stop in Seattle and offering up its 2nd Fox event in 7 months. Flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson makes his 2nd title defense against John Moraga, whose UFC fights against Ulysses Gomez and Chris Cariaso have been buried on Facebook, so the jump to main event is a substantial one for the challenger.
Also on the main card is a big welterweight showdown between Jake Ellenberger and Rory MacDonald, a welterweight slugfest between Robbie Lawler and Siyar Bahadurzada, and a women's bantamweight bout between Liz Carmouche and Jessica Andrade.
The prelims are headlined by TUF 15 winner Mike Chiesa facing Jorge Masvidal. Brendan Schaub returns from his scintillating performance at Metamoris to face Matt Mitrione, and Mac Danzig takes on Melvin Guillard.
Here's what the July 27th card looks like right now:
Main Card (Fox, 8 PM ET/5 PM PT)
Demetrious Johnson vs. John Moraga
Jake Ellenberger vs. Rory MacDonald
Robbie Lawler vs. Siyar Bahadurzada
Liz Carmouche vs. Jessica Andrade
Preliminary Card (FX, 5 PM ET/2 PM PT)
Michael Chiesa vs. Jorge Masvidal
Danny Castillo vs. Bobby Green
Mac Danzig vs. Melvin Guillard
Matt Mitrione vs. Brendan Schaub
Yves Edwards vs. Spencer Fisher
Germaine de Randamie vs. Julie Kedzie
Preliminary Card (Facebook, 3:30 PM ET/12:30 PM PT)

Scott Quigg moves to Matchroom Boxing, looks to get career back on track
Badlefthook.com - 7 hours 2 min ago
Scott Quigg has sat too long, and his career had stalled out due to a lack of TV opportunities for promoter Ricky Hatton. That's in the past now, though, as Quigg has signed a new deal with Matchroom Boxing, opening him up as a featured player on Sky Sports.
Quigg (25-0-1, 18 KO) hasn't fought since November, when he outclassed veteran Rendall Munroe on the Hatton-Senchenko undercard. With Hatton Promotions freezed out of Sky, and there being no relationship between Hatton and old promoter Frank Warren, who owns BoxNation, Quigg's TV opportunities -- and thus his fight opportunities -- were not just severely limited, they were essentially non-existent.
Quigg will return on June 29 in Bolton, a card headlined by Gavin Rees vs Anthony Crolla. Quigg is understandably excited to get his career moving again.
"I've got the same hunger as always and I just want to get active again and I think Matchroom Sport and Sky Sports is the place to get that. I can't wait to get back in there, that's where I'm at home and I've missed it.
"We're getting the ball rolling in Bolton. I've had one fight in a year so it's about getting the momentum going and looking to make waves in the division again.
"I came into boxing wanting to be a world champion, I don't want to settle at British or European - I've come in to be the best. You might need a bit of luck here and there but I think I have the ability and I know I have the desire and dedication to make it happen."
The one downside here is that with Carl Frampton jumping to Warren, Quigg's move to Matchroom again puts the kibosh on that fight, which is probably the biggest 122-pound fight in the world right now.

Mayweather vs Canelo: Nacho Beristain can't see Alvarez solving Floyd
Badlefthook.com - 7 hours 40 min ago
Nacho Beristain sees Canelo Alvarez having a big chance on September 14 when he faces Floyd Mayweather, but as good as he thinks Alvarez has become, the Hall of Fame trainer doesn't think he can solve the puzzle of Mayweather's defense.
"[Canelo] has quality and now he has the opportunity to be great and show people that he is a top level fighter. In his fights, Floyd is a boxer who is totally on the defensive and that creates a lot of problems for his opponents. You think you can [beat him], but when you're face to face [with him] in the ring it's like the puzzle is written in Chinese. It is a great opportunity for [Canelo] to surprise the entire world, not just Mexico, but I don't think he will be able to deal with Mayweather's defensive style."
Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO) has not had to deal with anyone nearly as talented as Mayweather (44-0, 26 KO), but then you can say that about all of Mayweather's opponents. Of course, the other thing you can say about all of them is that they lose, so, you know. There's that, too.

Pascal Krauss vs. Hyun Gyu Lim reportedly targeted for UFC 164
Bloody Elbow - 8 hours 33 min ago
It was expected that with UFC 164 in Milwaukee, the UFC matchmakers would try and get Milwaukee-based Roufusport fighters on the card. According to a report from German website Ground and Pound, Roufusport welterweight Pascal Krauss will fight South Korea's Hyun Gyu Lim on the August 31st PPV.
Krauss (11-1) has been in the UFC since 2010, but has fought just three times since making the move from regional European shows to the big stage. He won a "Fight of the Night" award in his decision victory over Mark Scanlon at UFC 122 in Germany, but missed all of 2011 with injuries. "Panzer" then suffered his first pro loss as he was beaten by John Hathaway at UFC on Fox 3 in New Jersey. Krauss got back in the win column by beating up Mike Stumpf at UFC on Fox 6 in Chicago.
Lim (11-3-1) turned in a successful UFC debut against Marcelo Guimaraes this past March, knocking out the Brazilian with a well-timed knee to the head. He had previously seen his planned November 2012 debut against David Mitchell scrapped after doctors deemed him unfit to compete at UFC on Fuel 6 in Macau. Lim has won his last 6 fights, with 5 of them coming by KO or TKO.
UFC 164 is headlined by a lightweight title fight between Ben Henderson and T.J. Grant. If Krauss/Lim is confirmed by UFC officials it is likely that this bout will take place on the preliminary card.

Bernard Hopkins vs Sergey Kovalev ordered by IBF
Badlefthook.com - 9 hours 36 min ago
Bernard Hopkins has been ordered to defend his IBF light heavyweight title against rising contender Sergey Kovalev, with a date of July 17 given to reach an agreement before the bout heads to purse bid.
Hopkins (53-6-2, 32 KO) was set to face Karo Murat on July 13 in Brooklyn, but that fight fell apart when Murat couldn't get into the U.S. due to visa issues. Kovalev (21-0-1, 19 KO) fought this past weekend, smashing Cornelius White in three rounds. The 30-year-old Russian has made it very clear, as his his team, that he wants to face the 48-year-old legend and boxing's oldest-ever champion.
There is some question as to whether or not Hopkins will want to take this fight. Kovalev is very dangerous on paper, and Bernard has said he wants a unification fight with the likes of Nathan Cleverly, Beibut Shumenov, or Adonis Stevenson in the fall. But there won't be a belt on his side to unify if he doesn't defend against Kovalev, either. So he's between a rock and a hard place. And given his willingness to face Murat, it would look awfully fishy if Hopkins or Golden Boy started questioning the drawing power of Kovalev or anything like that.
Bottom line is that it's a very interesting fight between an all-time great and a guy who is just smashing opponents right now. Hopefully, it happens. If it does, who do you see winning?

Arthur Abraham in dispute with Sauerland, says he may retire
Badlefthook.com - 10 hours 3 min ago
Arthur Abraham is gambling that his career is still worth money, as the former 160- and 168-pound titleholder is holding out for money with promoter Sauerland Event, saying that if he doesn't reach an agreement with the European power firm, he may retire from the sport:
"If Sauerland Event does not reach an agreement with my lawyer, I will not box....neither on August 24th or later on. I do not need to continue my boxing career, and I can finish it right now. Athletes should be treated fairly," Abraham stated.
Abraham (36-4, 28 KO) is currently scheduled to fight someone named Willbeforce Shihepo, which is totally awesome, on August 24. That card will be headlined by Juergen Braehmer's next bout, and the linked BoxingScene.com report above states that ARD, the German TV network carrying the card, aren't exactly itching for the Abraham bout, meaning they're not looking to pay much for it, which limits what Sauerland can or would be willing to pay the fighter.
I can't say as though I'd really miss Abraham much, because I've never personally been a fan, but one of two things is happening here: Abraham doesn't realize how much of a hit his stock has taken lately, or maybe Sauerland is lowballing him even by the current Abraham standards as they should be. Or maybe, as many things in boxing, it's a mixture of both.

UFC 161: James Krause stunned by $100,000 night
Bloody Elbow - 10 hours 15 min ago
MMA Mania's Brian Hemmingerspoke to James Krause who submitted Sam Stout at UFC 161 on Saturday and took home the Fight of the Night and Submission of the Night bonuses. The UFC newcomer still can't quite believe what's happened:
Brian Hemminger (MMAmania.com): What was it like watching the rest of the fight card knowing you had a good chance of walking away with these big bonuses?
James Krause: I didn't even really, it didn't hit me until the main event that this is quite possible I could have another 50 or 100 thousand dollars coming my way. My teammates right afterwards were telling me, "That's Fight of the Night and Submission of the Night!" and I blew it off saying, "Sure man, whatever," and then the night kept going and the odds started leaning in my favor. It still hasn't really hit me that I won those bonuses.
I still have to pass the drug test. I haven't taken an illegal drug in my entire life but all I keep thinking about is, "What if I somehow fail this drug test?" I've never smoked anything in my life and I'm worried about this test. It's unreal. It hasn't clicked for me and I don't know if it ever will that this is really happening.
Brian Hemminger (MMAmania.com): In your immediate post-fight interview with Ariel Helwani, he brought up the fact that you could still be on the hook for some bonuses and you said it would be incredible life changing money. So, now that you've won it, how much is $100,000 going to change things for you?
James Krause: Let's face it. Two weeks ago I wasn't even in the UFC and now I have over $100,000 in my bank account? It doesn't even make sense to me. It's crazy. I've worked so hard to get here and the things that I always knew could happen are finally starting to happen. It's just so surreal and awesome.
